3 Tips To PREPARE For FILMING DAY
Now that you've booked your project, its time to get ready for filming day! This is an exciting event where the videographer will capture the content for your final video. However, a lack of preparation can drastically slow things down, so make sure to follow these 5 tips to crush it on game day!
1. PREPARE THE "SPEECH"
I've only seen 2 people speak fluently on demand in front of the camera; I can barely do it myself and I have years of public speaking experience. Why am I telling you this? Because I've seen talent on screen fumble, blank out, and one time straight up QUIT because they did not know what to say.
Don't let this happen to you or your employees! It is crucial to have everyone who will speak on camera prepare and rehearse. Many think they are great speakers until its time to do it and end up like deer in headlights. Don't let that happen in your shoot!
I personally recommend writing a script, and using a TELEPROMPTER (we have one). That way, the talent doesn't have to memorize anything, and they can just read it off the screen while they stare directly at the camera.
So, have everyone who will talk write a script! Even if they don't use the teleprompter, it will force them to articulate their points in a concise and organized manner. Remember that most editors charge per hour, so its much cheaper to have them edit a 4 minute organized speech, as opposed to a 20 minute ramble and then cherry pick the "good parts" (this can also look very choppy in the edit...). This will also save you time while filming; which means extra time to film more content and take full advantage of the day!
2. PREPARE THE AREA
This sounds obvious but it can be overlooked. Preparing the filming area is crucial for a quality production. But this is not limited to organized furniture, clean walls, and floors—the audio is as important (sometimes even more so) than the aesthetics. Are there any background noises? Are there loud machines, people talking, music, people cleaning? All this will affect production.
You can't always control all ambient audio, but the more you can minimize and prepare for it the better. No matter how great the video looks, if the audio is tainted by a leaf blower it won't be an acceptable video; which means shooting in another location or some other time. Some microphones can pick up mouse giggles—so having a acoustically clean area is essential.
This also includes logistics. Will the area be available? Does it need to be booked in advanced? Remember the 5 Ps: Prior Prevention Prevents Poor Performance!
3. PREPARE THE PROJECT
Lastly, the generally idea for the project must be hashed out between you and videographer. Is it an interview, event filming, open house, fitness training? Whatever it is, your videographer will discuss and plan it beforehand with you. However, remember this is a collaborative effort. If you want any specific shot, angle, person interview or audio; plan for it!
That way the videographer can show up with an organized schedule ready to film all the required media in an efficient and organized manner.
